Description
History & Identity
The history of this establishment begins right after the Asia Minor Catastrophe with grandfather Nikos Kasidis, operating initially as a coffee shop, grocery store, and greengrocer. In 1959, it was transformed into a tavern. Today, its name is inextricably linked with Mr. Makis and Kyra-Vaso (Mrs. Vaso), who continue the tradition with passion.
Environment & Atmosphere
Location: The tavern is located in the lush, mountainous village of Kissos, approximately 4 km from Agios Ioannis.
Summer: The elevated veranda with its large grapevine trellis offers coolness and shade during the summer months, creating the ideal setting for a relaxing meal.
Winter: During the winter, the atmosphere moves to the warm interior of the tavern, dominated by the scent of wood and traditional dishes.
Cuisine & Specialties
The trademark of the restaurant is its traditional wood-fired oven, where most of the dishes are slow-cooked daily, alongside their own homemade sourdough bread. Many of the vegetables and herbs used are of their own production.
Highlights of the menu include:
Wood-Oven Cooked Dishes: Lemon-braised goat with potatoes, rooster in red wine sauce with hilopites (traditional pasta), beef with chestnuts, and braised goat (gida kokkinisti).
Parchment Paper (Ladokolla): Mutton and pork slow-baked in parchment paper that melts in your mouth.
Pelion Dishes: Traditional spetsofai (sausage and pepper stew), handmade pies of the day, trahanas (grain-based soup), stuffed grape leaves (dolmadakia / yaprakia), and stuffed zucchini blossoms.
